Every month, we’ll be sitting down with a different regional business development manager to find out all about them and their role within WysePower. Kicking off the series is Andy Roberts – Sales & Estimates Manager for Midlands & South. We quizzed him about his role, what he brings to the business and what makes WysePower an excellent site services provider.

I’d like to think people generally come to me because of the technical aspects of the project, so I know what their requirements are through gaining valuable experience out on site and turning that into a viable solution. Tell us a bit about yourself and your role

I’ve worked for WysePower for 18 years now, I started on the tools and worked my way up to Estimator, I then looked to get into the development side of the business, and now I oversee the estimating and sales for the Midlands and south of the UK.

I’d like to think people generally come to me because of the technical aspects of the project, so I know what their requirements are through gaining valuable experience out on site and turning that into a viable solution. So I take very limited information and produce something that is going to work. I advise the project manager, estimators, and quantity surveyors as to why we’ve done it in a particular way, and I also make it the most cost-effective solution for them and for us to win the project.

A part of my role is helping the guys who work with me to work in a way that I would expect from the service myself, so we get the tenders in, we turn them around in a timely manner, they go back absolutely correct, and we take it from there to the next step. We do site visits and move it on, so the role is also about gaining relationships and trust with the people we deal with constantly.

What’s been your proudest achievement?

We’ve had some good wins of late so I’m proud of all of them to be honest! I love winning, it’s been bred into me. It doesn’t matter if a project is £2500 or £2.5million, they all mean the same, they all move on to something else. If it’s a £2500 job, that project manager is going on to a £1million project eventually, and it’s given the same level of service no matter what scale it is. I’m also proud of every job that we win because it’s the same amount of work that goes into winning it.

Why should companies come to WysePower and not your competitors?

I think we offer excellent service. We’ve got a lot of good people with very good technical ability, who can produce a quote from next to nothing. If you’ve got very limited information, we can make something of that. We also have excellent kit, it’s all new or as good as new. Whether we use new or refurbished equipment on a project, it’s all the same standard. As a business, we always aim to do the job to the best of our ability and with the best equipment.

We like to create relationships on the back of our projects. We always get customers who come back to us directly because they know the information they receive from us is absolutely right, we turn things around quickly, we go and do site visits, and we just make sure everything is exactly what we say it’s going to be.

What do you personally bring to the business?

That’s a tough question actually! I strive to win absolutely everything that comes through the door, I’m very competitive. I do like to think I’m approachable and knowledgeable, if you reach me on the phone, on email, or a Teams message – you’ll get a response from me straight away. I’ve created a lot of relationships with our customers because of that. Nothing is too much trouble.

I like the estimators to do exactly the same. We’re only as good as our last job at the end of the day, so the better we get, the more projects we win and the better our relationships with the clients are. We want everyone to move forward.

You’ve been with WysePower for 18 years, what keeps you going?

I enjoy my job. As I’ve mentioned earlier, I started here on the tools and I’ve slowly worked my way up through a lot of hard work, I’ve put a lot of hours in, and I get results. I always aim to out-do everyone else and that spurs me on so if I get more results than others well, it’s for the benefit of everybody. So yeah, I enjoy my job, I wouldn’t have stuck with it for so long if I didn’t! I like always having the freedom to progress and move on as the business gets bigger – it opens more opportunities.
